Epic Wants to Use its New Unreal Engine 5 to Open Up Gaming’s Metaverse

Announced in early April, Epic Games’ State of Unreal, broadcast on Twitch and YouTube, opened with a keynote full of important information for the impressive Unreal Engine 5.

Starting with a release of the famous engine of early access already dating back to a year. The Unreal Engine 5 is now available to all and took advantage of this event to show off its best features.

Starting today, any developer can download Unreal Engine 5 for free and experiment with this impressive engine. As with Unreal Engine 4, the standard license will be completely free to use, provided that the game developed has not earned $1 million in revenue.

So everyone can try out the intriguing technologies Nanite (geometry), Lumen (lighting), Temporal Super Resolution (image scaling), or MetaSounds (procedural audio). However, the new engine still needs to be refined on many points.

This is particularly true of its open-world skills. CD Projekt RED took advantage of the keynote to highlight its partnership with Epic Games for the development of The Witcher 4 with Unreal Engine 5. Crystal Dynamics announced that the next Tomb Raider will also be developed with Unreal Engine 5.

Every Unreal Engine download will also come with a free demo game appropriately titled Lyra Starter Game. It’s a third-person shooter that lets you get the hang of the Unreal Engine 5 in a fun way.
