Until then an insistent rumor, the development of a new Witcher game has just been officially confirmed by CD Projekt RED.
After Cyberpunk 2077 and its upcoming expansion, the Polish studio will return to the world of Geralt of Riv with “a new saga” and… a new engine!
For the moment, there’s not much information about this new opus in the legendary action-RPG franchise of The Witcher. We have to be satisfied with the mention of a new open-world saga, which will probably take place without our dear white-haired wizard as the main character.
On the technical side, however, CD Projekt RED has indicated that it wants to change its engine for this new adventure. Gone is its in-house engine REDengine, the Polish studio is embarking on a partnership with Epic Games to adapt the impressive Unreal Engine 5 to open-world experiences.
The two entities are entering into a new long-term partnership since the announcement of this new game mentions future versions of the Unreal Engine. However, CD Projekt RED has made it clear that its REDengine will still be used for the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 expansion, in the not too distant future, and that this new The Witcher game will not be exclusive to the Epic Games Store.
For now, that’s all we know about this new entry in The Witcher saga. Let’s bet that a lot of time will pass before we know more. The development of Cyberpunk 2077 is indeed far from being finished, and the Polish studio probably doesn’t intend to repeat the mistakes of the past with too early communication.
