A physical edition that will mark the return of the event and its opening ceremony in person, but with a smaller audience.

Gamescom is back to normal. E3 may be the exception, but 2022 is shaping up to be the big return of physical gatherings in the video game industry. While the Tokyo Game Show and GDC have already confirmed that their events will be held in person, it’s Gamescom’s turn to do the same. The German trade show will open its doors to professionals and the public in Cologne from August 24 to 28.

Beware, however, that there will be fewer places than in 2019, a pre-pandemic edition that reached a record 370,000 visitors. The event will nevertheless retain the digital activities implemented over the past two years, and its traditional announcement-rich opening ceremony hosted by Geoff Keighley. The Opening Night Live will be held on the evening of August 23, 2022, in a hall built during the pandemic and will be broadcast live. It remains to be seen who the first exhibitors will be, with the organizer admitting that “some companies still need more time, but the demand is there”.
