Critical success does not always rhyme with commercial success. And Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is (unfortunately) once again the proof…
Indeed, the title developed by the teams of Eidos Montreal doesn’t seem to have reached the objectives set by Square Enix.
Available since last October, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy was presented as one of the nice surprises of the end of 2021. Far from being devoid of any imperfections, it had the merit of offering a well-crafted narrative and a mastered humor. In addition to having been well received by the press, the players also seemed to have found a number of qualities in it.
However, during a meeting report, Square Enix’s president, Yosuke Matsuda, declared that the sales at the launch of the title were below their expectations, without giving exact figures. That said, the publisher is not despairing and says they are doing everything they can to make up for this slow and disappointing start to 2022.
It is interesting to note that this is the third time in a row that the sales of a production signed by Eidos Montreal are not up to Square Enix’s expectations. Indeed, after Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and Shadow of the Tomb Raider (which had a weak start according to Yosuke Matsuda), it’s now the turn of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy to not reach its objectives, at least during its launch period.
Finally, let’s remember that on the Square Enix scale, this is the second time that a Marvel title is below the publisher’s expectations, after the resounding failure of Marvel’s Avengers.
